COMPLEX INTERPLAY OF MUSIC AND MOVEMENT

The Pumpenhaus is full of atmosphere. A wind rushes from the left speaker to the right, accentuated by a strange crater and sign. Then the first words fall. They too are very

strange, but with a distinct speech melody, which is reproduced by a dancer with her arms. At least that is the first impression. On closer inspection, however, it seems as if the dancer's movements modulate the words. And this is indeed the case. She and her colleagues, with whom she influences the digitally generated sounds.

Keren Levi's new production 'unmute', in which she collaborates with the Slagwerk Den Haag, is a complex interplay of music and movement. The sound determines the dance and is in turn determined by the resulting movement. In this way, new sound spaces are created again and again, which demand new patterns of movement from the dancers. This begins with single sounds and simple steps and then increases on the acoustic side to a symphony from the dance side to a dynamic choreography. The human body becomes an instrument that plays itself.

The repertoire that she uses is extremely diverse. It ranges from the steps that lead to staccato-like tones to gentle movements that result in flowing melodies. With a violin bow that strokes over large metal sheets hanging from the ceiling, long-lasting tones are produced and then carefully modulated by dance steps. Mystical songs, which seem to look over into the present as if from a deep past, make the dance soft and dreamy.

With the use of speech and singing, the formal aspect of the train is added to the content. According to the title "unmute" Levi wants to make the silent audible again. To do so, she uses words from dead languages, which she mixes with computer-generated voices, thus bringing past and future into a synthesis. Again it is the dance, something out of the existing. Creating something new and giving a voice to words that no longer have a speaker.
